Annual meeting of Aarhus Centers – Vienna 2 to 5 June 2015

With negotiation and assistance of OSCE, the 13 Aarhus Centers from 4 countries of Western Balkans did sign an agreement for cooperating and coordinating activities and actions for better environment and decision making process in south East Europe. Aarhus Centers from Albania (three AIC), Serbia (five AIC), Bosnia and Herzegovina (two AIC) and Montenegro (three AIC) did commit to cooperate on a proper document that enable us to be more active and strong advocates between NGOs, community and public institutions.

Environment and security are linked. Environmental degradation and competition over natural resources can lead to tensions. Environmental co-operation, on the other hand, can build trust and confidence. The Aarhus Centers provide platforms to engage citizens, governments and the private sector in a dialogue on environmental challenges. Access to information, public participation in environmental decision-making and access to justice in environmental matters are the pillars of the 1998 Aarhus Convention. They are also the basis for the work of the 59 Aarhus Centers operating in 14 countries in the OSCE area.
