An informed community - the basic premise for sustainable development in protected areas

Vjosw Nartw protected area, especially Narta Lagoon

Beneficiary Interest Group:

Fishermen operate in the Narta Lagoon, only those who are members of the OMP (Fishery Management Organization), who have a fishing license and permit and who respect the hunting season and other legal fishing standards.

The purpose of this project is:

"Economic empowerment of interest groups in protected areas is a guarantee for the protection and non-damage of these areas, since only by considering this territory as a source of income, they will be able to protect it and not allow anyone to intervene to damage area."

Brief description of the project

The aim of this project is to raise awareness and change the mentality of residents and interest groups that operate in the protected area "Vjosë-Nartë", to consider this area not only as a source of income and livelihood but also as an extraordinary natural asset that will serve as a home for future generations. The area needs support in the better implementation of legality, for the protection of natural resources, the strengthening of artisanal fishing, while maintaining the harmony between wild nature and man. The use of the right tools for fishing in this area ensures a better protection in the preservation of the whole ecosystem and the ecological balance, the adequate protection of wild species, ensuring the well-being and conditions for their economic exploitation. Protecting the forest from illegal logging, fires, insect pests and diseases is a wake-up call for the conservation of the area's ecosystem. The implementation of monitoring activities of the state of flora, fauna and ecosystems in this area enables the identification of current problems.

Objectives of the Project

1. Punctual and rigorous respect of the legal framework for minimizing human impact in the Vjosë-Nartë protected area and preserving the integrity of the ecosystem and the ecological balance;

2. Adequate protection of natural wealth, ensuring well-being and favorable conditions for their economic use, without damaging the entirety of the ecosystem;

3. Encouragement and awareness of the community, local government and law-enforcement institutions for the design and implementation of favorable policies in support of the Vjosë-Nartë protected area, to ensure sustainable development.
